Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have crafted the perfect Hollywood relationship. Celebrities, take notes.

(Olivia Harris/Reuters)
A couple of weeks ago during the London premiere of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” star Andrew Garfield was quite rude to a red carpet reporter who deigned to call Emma Stone his girlfriend.
To regular tabloid readers — or even those who take a cursory glance at People magazine in the grocery store — that sounds ridiculous, because Stone is his girlfriend. It’s long-established that the two met while filming “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2010, and have been photographed together (including the inevitable making-out-on-street-corner shots) for years. If it’s all a publicity stunt, it’s a pretty incredible one.
Still, Garfield wasn’t very nice. “Who’s my girlfriend?” he snapped. “You’re making an assumption about my personal life, and my personal life is not public property.” The reporter pointed out the facts: “You’re in a massive film with her,” she said. Garfield wasn’t having it.
Was there fallout over this unpleasant little exchange? Nope, none whatsoever. People and the Internet are obsessed with the couple, and that’s because Garfield and Stone have smartly managed to craft the perfect Hollywood relationship. It’s much harder than it seems.
Really, it comes down to being adorable and down-to-earth enough that demanding your privacy as you make your living from people liking your relationship (enough to maybe, say, buy tickets to “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″) becomes endearing rather than what it actually is — incredibly hypocritical.
Garfield and Stone make that look easy, as the Internet is chock-full of stories dissecting every sweet thing they have said about each other, or lists that chronicle “21 Reasons Why Andrew Garfield And Emma Stone Were The Cutest Couple Of 2013.” And yet, they’ve never even said they’re a couple.
The most important rule: Never directly confirm you’re in a relationship, just concoct an air of mystery that keeps fans intensely curious. As a result, the blogosphere is sent into a frenzy over something like Stone’s “Good Morning America” interview earlier this week, where she gushed about working with Garfield on set. “It’s a dream to work with him,” she said. “He’s obviously one of the greatest actors I think we have alive today and he’s also just a remarkable human being. I love him very much.”
She said “LOVE”? Sure enough, the blogs exploded, making it sound like she confessed a dirty secret. “Emma Stone Admits She Loves Andrew Garfield on ‘GMA’!” exclaimed Just Jared. “Emma Stone’s Rare Andrew Garfield Admission: ‘I Love Him Very Much,’”reported E! Online.
Another key factor: When asked about the other person, simply say very nice things that sound romantic but aren’t obviously so. They are great at this. (“He’s an incredibly important person to me,” Stone said in her Vogue cover profile. ““I thank my lucky stars that we’ve been able to be on this ride together,” Garfield said in the story.)
Then, to top it off, when promoting a project together, get physically close, but not too much. People will see the guy putting his hand on the lady’s back to help her down the steps, and declare him a modern-day Romeo. Or, simply just look at each other: Theblogs will declare that a sweet “stolen glance.”
Seriously, celebrities in Hollywood need to be taking notes about how to be totally evasive and yet completely charming. Even Ellen DeGeneres seemed delighted when the couple stopped by her show last month with “Spider-Man 2″ co-star Jamie Foxx. Both refused to spill a word as she teased them about their kissing scenes and the sleeping arrangements during promotional tours across the world. (“Do any of the co-stars have to share a hotel room or anything like that?”)
“Just drop it,” Garfield pleaded while Stone giggled and Foxx made all kinds of innuendos. Still no answer from either of them — and fans are still left wondering, and most importantly, caring deeply about the answer.

Thursday Box Office: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Spins $8.7M

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, from Sony Corporation, debuted on Thursday evening to shows starting as early as 7:00pm, and it amassed a solid $8.7 million gross via said previews. That’s a bit under the $10m that Spider-Man 3 opened with via Thursday midnight screenings on this weekend back in 2007, and just below the $10.2m Thursday haul of Captain America: The Winter Soldier last month. But it’s above the $7.5m that The Amazing Spider-Man scored via its Monday-at-midnight debut over the very long 4th of July weekend. Since the first Amazing Spider-Man opened on a Tuesday in the middle of a summer day leading into a long holiday weekend, the original Spidey reboot isn’t exactly a good comparison.

Spider-Man 3 kicked off summer 2007 with a $10 million midnight haul which lead into a then-record breaking $151m weekend, meaning that the third Raimi Spider-Man film earned 6.6% of its weekend haul at midnight. In 2008, Iron Man earned just 3.4% of its $102m haul via $3.5m worth of Thursday previews. The next three summer kick-off debuts saw over/under 5% in midnight hauls, as X-Men Origins: Wolverine earned $5m towards an $85m debut (5.8%), Iron Man 2 earned $7.5m towards a $128m opening (5.8%), and Thor earned $3.25m towards a $65.7m debut (4.9%).

Emma Stone Defends Her Body: "I'm Not Sick. I Eat Sandwiches."

There's no denying the constant pressures stars face to look their best, but even when a female celeb is thin they are usually criticized for being "too skinny" or "sickly."
Emma Stone is well aware of the body haters, and admits that she's read the critical comments from fans and taken them to heart.
"I firmly believe that nothing really affects you or can really bother you if you don't already feel that way about yourself," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" star says in an interview with USA Today. "I've seen a lot of comments that say, 'Eat a sandwich' or 'She looks sick.' I've been looking at myself in the mirror being mean to myself. I'm not sick. I eat sandwiches."
"In no way is it my intention to be a bad example," Stone continues. "That has been kind of bothering me lately. I've shamed myself for it. We shame each other online. We're always too skinny or too fat or too tall or too short. They're just confirming this feeling I have about myself. I'm trying to figure my body out. It bothers me because I care so much about young girls. We're shaming each other and we're shaming ourselves, and it sucks."
In addition, Emma says that she makes a strong effort to not be a mean girl. "When I make a comment about someone or I choose to gossip about someone and speculate about their body or their life or their face, it's usually a reflection of something I'm feeling myself," she reveals. "That has become ingrained in me. I'm trying to eliminate gossip from my own life."

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Prepare to be amazed. Get tickets now for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 3D and IMAX 3D!

One of the best things to happen to fans of genre films, comics and novels in recent years has been the steady dispelling of the idea that cartoons and live-action adaptations of them are necessarily un-serious. But that does not mean that all science fiction, fantasy and superhero stories are necessarily literature. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which arrives in theaters today, is the perfect example of a movie that is coasting on the promise of a big pay-day.
The pattern repeats in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” The most promising antagonist in the film is Max (Jamie Foxx), a put-upon Oscorp engineer. His life is transformed by an accidental encounter with Spider-Man (now Andrew Garfield), who saves him from an incoming car, and tells Max, “You’re not nobody. You’re somebody.” For Spider-Man, it is patter. For Max, it is a talisman against the anger he feels about Oscorp stealing his generator designs, a boss (B.J. Novak) who disrespects him and his crushing loneliness.
Max’s journey from nobody to super-villain could have been an intriguing exploration of race in New York. Before his transformation, Max is exploited by a large corporation. After he is changed, Max staggers out into the streets of New York in a hoodie, looking either physically or mentally ill. And when he is captured, he is turned into a medical research subject by an unscrupulous doctor. Any one of these situations might have been an interesting way into how black New Yorkers are treated by big companies when they are employees, the police when they are homeless or ill, or the medical establishment when they are sick.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ gestures at these ideas occasionally. Max, who is fascinated by the prospect of being recognized and acknowledged, is wonderstruck when a news camera projects his image on Times Square screens. He dreams of destroying the power grid that was built with his designs, but without credit or financial reward. And Max tells the doctor who imprisons him that “Everyone’s going to know what it’s like to live in my world, a world without power. A world without Spider-Man.”
The idea  is clankingly obvious, both in its connection to Max’s job and his lack of social capital. But give the movie as a whole, the presence of any sort of idea at all counts for a lot. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ has two other antagonists to deal with, as well as a back story for Peter’s father, and a romantic subplot that turns Peter into a stalker and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) into a flibbertigibbet. It is so crowded that one of the most iconic moments in comics [[major spoiler on that link]], translated onto what ought to have been a grand scale, barely has room to breathe. Everything in the movie suffocates.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ exists mostly to keep the rights to the character from reverting to Marvel. But in a media environment where Marvel and DC have both intermittently set stronger standards for superhero movies, even a commercial play like this one ought to try to swing higher. Peter Parker and his city both deserve better.
